Target has only just shelved the Christmas ornaments and put out Valentine’s Day goodies but already the national retailer has made a New Year’s resolution: Its stores will again remain closed on Thanksgiving Day this year.

It’s the second year in a row the Minneapolis-based retailer won’t open on the holiday, a change it began amid the coronavirus pandemic to help reduce crowds. Before 2020, the last time Target was closed on Thanksgiving was in 2011.

Target announced the early holiday season plans Wednesday while reporting the company’s 2020 holiday performance, in which it revamped the Black Friday experience and saw massive online growth.

Along with minimizing crowds, Target said in a blog post Wednesday that it closed stores last Thanksgiving to “help our guests take the stress out of getting the best deals of the season.”

“The response was so positive that we’ll carry it forward this year, keeping our Target stores closed all day long on Thanksgiving Day,” the company said.
